Clashes in Cairo. A Coptic protest turned sour as clashes erupted between demonstrators and Egypt’s security forces. Members of the Christian sect gathered to protest an Oct 1 attack on Mar Guirgus church in the south of Egypt, and religious persecution in Egyptian society. When a group of protesters reached Maspero, the state radio and television building, shots were fired and soon fighting had spread. Angry protesters hurled rocks and there was at least one report of an army vehicle purposefully running over demonstrators in the street. Reportedly 25 were killed and 272 injured, both soldiers and protesters are among the dead.
